As I've posted many, many times before, I'm a foster-mom for Missouri Pitbull Rescue. Right now we are really busy! (when aren't we?) We are looking for volunteers who don't necessarily want to foster, but can donate some time to help out the rescue. We're looking for people to:
Answer emails, run errands, walk kennel dogs, attend fundraisers, write articles about pit bulls, write grants, MPR promo...and the list goes on.
If you have an interest in animal rescue, or just becoming a member of a local group, please check us out: http://www.mprgroup.net/misc/volunteer.html
If you decide to volunteer, just fill out the application and one of the other volunteers will contact you.
THANKS!
Amnesty Day for Kansas City Pitbull Owners
October 6th , 2007
KCMO Pit Bull Spay and Neuter Amnesty Day
3710 Main Street
9am to Noon
Spay and Neuter Kansas City is working with KCMO Animal Health and Public Safety to allow a one-time opportunity for Pit Bull owners to comply with mandatory spay and neuter ordinance. A special rabies clinic will be held on October 6 th from 9am to noon at 3710 Main Street, KCMO. On this day only, KCMO Pit Bull owners can come in and purchase a current $5 rabies vaccinations. City licensing for an altered pet is $12 and for an unaltered pet is $33. Pit Bull owners who participate in this clinic will be scheduled for a free spay and neuter for their Pit Bull.
In August of 2006, KCMO City Council passed ordinance # 060806, which calls for the mandatory spaying and neutering of every Pit Bull and Pit Bull mix in Kansas City, MO. Penalties for failure to spay or neuter can result in fines up to $500 and impoundment of the Pit Bull.
This is an EXCELLENT opportunity for those who cannot afford spay or neuter for their pet. Its also a discounted price on the vaccination. If you know anyone who can benefit from this, please pass the info along!
On my quest for the ultimate sushi restaurant, I've tried two new places.
- Han Shin at 117th & Roe
This was a fancy-pants Kansas restaurant. The atmosphere was sophisticated, but the sushi was lacking. The rolls were loose and fell apart, and were very expensive. The food was good, but nothing special. The service was slow. - Hikari Japanese Steakhouse at 91st & Metcalf
I love this place!! This is my new favorite restaurant. The prices were extremely reasonable. The food was amazing, and the fish fresh. The staff was very friendly and fun. We sat at the sushi bar and the chef was excellent. He had a few special rolls not on the menu that he told us about. We ordered two of the special rolls- Crazy Lino Roll (fried), and the Tsunami Roll... both were delicious, but the Tsumani Roll was a work of art. It was piled high with panko and masago.
The chef told us that next time we visit, if we ask, he will make us a special that isn't on any menu-- just his creation du jour. On Friday and Saturday nights they serve free crab salad while you wait for your sushi!
My favorite coffe shop, City Grounds, is having a special coffee tasting event for Panama Esmeralda Especial on
and
| Panama Esmeralda Especial |
| Coffee from trees of the botanical variety 'Gesha' or 'Geisha' grown on farmer Price Peterson's Hacienda La Esmeralda in Panama has for the last several years consistently broken records paid for a green coffee: A 2007 lot sold at auction for an extraordinary $130 per pound. This lot of Gesha is from the same fields, crop and variety as the record breaking auction lot but was sold outside auction. With its bold, boat shaped beans and distinctive floral and chocolate cup, the Esmeralda Panama Gesha continues to be one of the world's most unique coffees. |
For some time now, my husband and I (along with some friends) have been searching out sushi restaraunts in Kansas City. Its tons of fun to try new places, but we've gone to some not-so-great ones too. I've decided to compile a list of the restaurants i've visited to remind myself what's good, and to help others who want to try some great food. (and please, if you know of a place I haven't visited-- tell me about it!!)
Domo 6322 Brookside plaza, Brookside, Kansas City (816) 333-6315
This restaurant is a quiet, but fancy place in Brookside, MO (read: expensive). They have a huge selection of sushi and other japanese cuisine. The best sushi roll is the Sexy Mama, and other good sushi rolls to try are the Las Vegas roll & salmon skin roll. Ask for the dessert of green tea ice cream and fried bananas called King Kong. Domo has a good happy hour (1/2 price cocktails).
Kokoro Express 340 West 75th Street (at the northeast corner of Wornall Avenue), Waldo, Kansas City (816) 363-0678
This is currently my favorite sushi restaurant. Kokoro has a limited selection, and no bar, but the prices are unbeatable! Kokoro also features korean and japanese cuisine. Its the fast-food of the sushi world. Make sure to try the Sunday Special roll. Also, this is THE place to order nigiri if you like it (fish on a rectangle of rice)-- the prices are 1/2 of what others charge they are just as good. Oh, and the banana tempura for dessert is amazing.
Kona Grill 444 Ward Parkway, Country Club Plaza
While not a traditional sushi restaurant, Kona Grill features some excellent sushi choices on their menu. The best feature of the place is the happy hour specials-- select sushi rolls are 1/2 price from 3-7pm (they have drink specials too!).
Kobe Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar 19800 E Valleyview Pkwy Independence, MO 64057 (816) 795-6808
While one of the pricer sushi restaurants, this is one of my favorite places. The atmosphere is great. The best sushi rolls are the computer roll, and the salmon crunch roll, although everything there is good.
Matsu Japanese Restaurant 427 Westport Road, Westport, Kansas City (816) 531-2602
Matsu has an authentic atmosphere, and was very busy when we visited. The sushi was good, and about average price.
Sakura 75th (at Nieman), Kansas City
Sakura is the last place we visited and by far the most fun. We were seated at the sushi bar, and in lieu of a menu and taking orders (which is an option if you sit at a table), a train runs on a track around the bar carrying various creations of the sushi chefs. You pay by the plate (at a fairly reasonable price), and get to sample a little of everything. This is definetly for the more adventerous. If you are open to trying new things, and don't require knowing what you are eating I highly recommend it.
Siki 601 Northwest Blue Parkway, Lees Summit (816) 525-4877
Out of all the sushi I've eaten, this is not the best place. While the prices were good, the atmosphere was not. The restaurant smelled "fishy" (not a sign of a good restaurant) and the place was dingy.
Wasahi Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar 328 NE 72nd St Kansas City, MO 64118
This is a fun little place north of the river. I've visited twice, and the people are very friendly. The sushi is good and fresh, and the prices are reasonable. They serve a wonderful Miso soup.
If you are interested in learning more about sushi, especially how to make your own, check out a mini-episode of Good Eats with Alton Brown.
I don't know about other pet owners, but my dogs love to be "naked" (outside & off-leash). Its increasingly difficult to find good, safe places to let the dogs run-- where they won't be in danger of traffic, or disturbing other people. My husband and I like to take the dogs to off-leash parks when we can, but currently the only two parks around are either member-only, or close to 20 miles away!
So, I was excited today when I learned that WOOF (Well Organized Off-leash Friends) is proposing plans to have an off-leash dog park located in Waldo (near Brookside) at the Sunnyside Park. This is so much closer to our home & work. One of the great ideas of this proposed park, are all the green features-- rain water collection, solar lighting, and recycling. KC, MO Parks Department will hold a public meeting in September (date coming soon!)-- which all supporters need to come!
If you've never been before, a dog park is a lot of fun, and is a great way to socialize your pets (and get them exercised!) Check out the website, and lend your support!
(any emails of support sent to: karmen_bradley@kcmo.org will be forwarded to the KCMO commissioners who will decide whether to approve the park)

Senator Barack Obama will be in Kansas City, MO on Saturday May 12th. I think this is an excellent opportunity to get involved in the campaign process-- meet the candidates, etc.
Hope to see some Kansas City Voxers there!
I heard one of the most disturbing news stories recently. This happened in the city where I live. Video
This woman was in need of help, obviously, and the police officers ignored her. They were more "worried" about busting her for something rather than getting her medical attention. For city employees that are supposed to help those in need (not just "bust criminals"), these officers did a horrible thing. The woman delivered her baby the next day stillborn.
Even if they had wanted to make sure she wasn't faking, they could've taken her to the hospital and been there while she was examined. Afterwards they could've done whatever necesssary for her crimes. Shouldn't a person's health come first?! Criminals who are shot/hurt during the crime at least get that much care.
I really think these officers need to be fired. I don't want to be pulled over by them. Who knows what may happen.
